3rd Annual Quinceañera Celebration Held For Foster Girls
On June 17th, the Almansor Court in Alhambra celebrated their 3rd Annual Quinceañera Celebration with eight foster girls who shared their big day together, along with 300 of their family and friends. The party was hosted by Quinceañera.com and the Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services.
This is the third year for this special event, which provides the foster girls with the opportunity to celebrate the traditional Hispanic coming-of-age occasion, despite their difficult living situations and transference to living in group homes. The organizers from Quinceañera.com and the Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services are hoping to continue the annual event and also to expand the number of girls who are able to participate next year.
Why The Quinceañera Is Important
A quinceañera is a very important tradition in Hispanic culture. Although it’s a high-spirited and festive event filled with music and food, it also has a deep significance to the young women who are celebrated. The event marks a girl’s journey into womanhood, and approves her of being mature enough to make her own decisions in life. The celebration also re-affirms her religious beliefs and dismisses her from childhood. From the quinceañera celebration onwards, she will not only accept adult responsibilities, but also be allowed to have the same privileges as mature people have, on a symbolic level.
The event at the Almansor Court included all of the traditional quinceañera customs: a formal waltz with chambelanes, the doll ceremony, the amazing food, and of course, the dresses. In fact, the week before, each of the eight girls got to experience dress fittings, hair appointments, manicures, makeovers, and dance lessons—all typical preparation that a young woman must go through for a quinceañera.
Quinceañera To Kickstart Empowerment
The eight girls were nominated by their social workers based on good grades and stability within their living conditions.
“It’s all about empowering the girls, making them feel like they can make it through even though they had a rough start,” said Pablo Scarpelli, editor of Quinceañera.com.
Just as these girls deserve to be empowered and have the chance for a quinceañera celebration, every girl with Hispanic roots deserves a quinceañera. It’s an important part of their youth, culture, and religion. If you have a daughter or a girl you’re a guardian for and her 15th birthday is approaching, you may be considering throwing her a quinceañera party of her own to honor her arrival into womanhood.
